A map of Christchurch in 1850—the year of the founding of the city—in contrast to the city layout as it is today! The original city was surrounded by town reserves. Out of the now well established "four avenues" (Bealey Ave, Fitzgerald Ave, Moorhouse Ave, Rollerston Ave), only Rollerston Ave (then named Antiqua Street) was part of the original city plan.
